Agreed! The free backlinks services are fake, also you're just wasting time there. Some says its a long term backlinks but the truth is that there is not backlinks that exist. Better to build you're links naturally by doing what Dian13 said. Article marketing is also a very effective tool to build your backlinks. Just be patient and don't rush.
While the absolute hard facts may be "secret" by the search engines, the search engines in the past have stated in one way or another not to use link farms, or purchase links. Rather than quote the search engines specifically, they have said in general, not to link to web spammers and to avoid bad neighborhoods on the web, as well as not to buy or sell links. What are web spammers and what are bad neighborhoods is somewhat subjective, but the idea is clear.
Rather, they often have said and continue to say to create your own unique, relevant content that will be found based on it's own merit. Basically, the more useful your information is, the more likely other people will find it useful and reference it or link to it. A good thought is that if it will be usefull to the readers, then that is a good test.
It is probably a risky endeavor to partake in these practices as one does not know who or what the search engines don't like.
An idea is to find someone, which may be oneself, who is a good writer that knows about your business. That person can write a great deal of useful iinformation on your business and what your business does. If you have a business, then you are already providing a product or service that someone else considers usefull. At that point all one is doing is writing about that product or service. Since it is in demand, useful information about it will generally be welcome.

I also agree. If you are to use any type of backlinking service ALWAYS make sure the company provides you with a report. The report should include the exact website page links where they have posted your anchored backlink. It is always better to create your own posts though. Most backlink services post very spammy looking comments.

Couldn't agree more. Which is why the best way is to join in active discussion and make comments. That's the healthy way of getting a backlink. But of course, dont spam with comments like "It's a great post, it's a great blog". These are all useless comments and rightly so, should be removed.

I'm not an expert in this area, but I've learned some things from others that I'm trying to implement and that might be helpful to you also.
First of all, I agree with everyone else here that using free backlinking services is not a good idea. I've heard quite a few bad stories about them. You could end up with your website getting penalized by Google. Then all your hard work will be for nothing.
Instead, Google has some webmaster tools and a webmaster guide. It would be a good idea for you to check them out and follow the recommendations.
I think that getting good links and ranking is hard work and takes time. Content is important. Add as much relevent content to your site as you can. Try to think of your customers and what would be valuable to them.
Write and get some articles published. This is a good way to get exposure. You might also put together a Youtube video.
Get active in forums that deal with the products or services you provide. You'll learn from them, you'll get some exposure, maybe some links, and you might be able to help someone else.
