If you are using Outlook one possible solution is to create backups of the pst files. Archiving will not reduce the file size of the pst files. If you are looking to gain manageability and reduce the pst file size then backups may be the solution. You can organize your backups by year and create individual backups for each year, then access them via external data source if needed. The backups can be accessed by Outlook via external data so if you need to find that email from 5 years ago you can. The email messages from years ago which really do not need to be in your current or working pst do not have to be, they can be backed up and accessed via external data source if needed. I think Smarsh and Liveoffice both are good for Email Archiving. But if your budget is not too high then go for smarsh.
