I'm doing some research on consumer product labeling, which falls under advertising and marketing according to the FTC Green Guides.
I need to understand the following:
1. How do entities become third-party certifiers to be able to certify companies for a specific consumer label? By consumer label, I mean something like Fair Trade, Cruelty-Free or most recently WindMade?
2. Can those entities be for-proft companies?
3. What is the actual process for getting approval to put a label on products?

If you are interested in becoming a certifier of an existing program/agency/label such as a LEED building certifier (http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=1815), you can contact the certifier of your choice for more information. Many third-party certifiers work with the local, state, or federal governments to advance green initiatives. If you are interested in becoming your own independent certifier, I would suggest that you contact your local government to better understand their current labeling efforts. For example, many state and local governments have their own iconography and labeling for goods made from or with recycled materials. You will likely have to research the requirements in your area to understand what regulations you will need to comply with.
2. There are for-profit businesses that offer certifications. Keep in mind that the integrity of the brand and what it represents to consumers may be influenced by a nonprofit or for-profit motive.
