Grant for retail for profit

Hello!

I am looking into whether it is possible to get a grant to open a for-profit sporting goods business for a specific sport growing in my local area.

 

Are there truly grants available for such a venture?  Are the only options open are to get a small business loan from the bank?

 

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi bsturlau, The Federal government does not provide grants to small businesses. Some federal grant programs are open to for-profit businesses, but these are usually very specialized, such as medical or agricultural research. There are federal and state government low interest loan guarantees for business owners who are having trouble getting loans through traditional channels. You can use the Loans and Grants search tool to find these. Also, have you seen this blog in the Loans and Grants Advisor? Although it is aimed at business owners with bad credit, it has good information for everyone on traditional and nontraditional financing options. Good luck!

You are wasting your time looking for grants for your business. If you need capital - there are many sources (bank and non-bank) that can help you. We list several on our website. I would also suggest you find a mentor - try SCORE or a local SBDC - they can help research your business - create a business and marketing plan - and help you find ways to finance (debt or trade credit).
