I think the current health care bill does address this.  But, for te mot part to see how it work - right now it is await and see game.  For those that can't pay - the government will subsidize through taxpayers.   If you want to know how many dr are in the U.S. - try the u.s. census bureau - they have tons of information about professional businesses.

Mary - If you are looking for employment statistics, I would recommend that you check out the Bureau of Labor Statistics. I did a quick search on small business medical practitioners, and came across the Occupational Outlook Handbook (2008-2009 which appears to be based on 2006 data). The handbook goes on to discuss economic outlook, work environment, etc: According to the site, 'Physicians and surgeons held about 633,000 jobs in 2006; approximately 15 percent were self-employed. About half of wage–and-salary physicians and surgeons worked in offices of physicians, and 18 percent were employed by hospitals. Others practiced in Federal, State, and local governments, including colleges, universities, and professional schools; private colleges, universities, and professional schools; and outpatient care centers.'
