That's an interesting issue. Artists do break ceramic stuff and create mosaics. They tear up paper and make new works. I think the copyright issue would revolve around whether or not you kept the essence of the original work or not. If you are keeping the essence of the original work, and repackagaing it as your own, then that would be a violation of copyright. But if no one would recognize the original work when you are done with it, I suspect you have a new work of art. There have got to be huge exceptions to this.
