I was advised to come to this website by one of my SCORE counselors.  I am looking for advice on how to license an invention to a specific industry that could use it in the manufacture of their products.

 

I'm a Master Electrician with 27 years in the trades and I own a small business near Denver, Colorado.

Congratulations on your project. I do recommend consulting with a patent or
trademark attorney. Also check with your local chamber to see if any small
business/entrepreneur is a member maybe they can tell you more. In Orlando
Florida we have counselors at our local colleges to help small business
owners with their endeavors. Maybe check your local colleges to see if there
is support for entrepreneurs/inventors. Hope these ideas help.

I would like to add few advices for your process. - Do not, under no circumstances, talk about your invention with other electricians. - Anyone who will be involved in the Patent process have to sing a strict NDA (Non Discloser Agreement with a BIG Non Compete paragraph!!! - The patent registration process has to be done with expert lawyers and my advice - do not save money, go to the best. - Have a prototype of your patent - Invention, built and tested. If not, then you may want to contact a patent attorney to help you through the process. Once you have a patent, you can approach companies about licensing the rights to produce your item. You may want to check with a small business development center in your area. Their services are free and they can direct you to someone who can evaluate your product and help you through the process.

Having been through a good portion of this (expensive) process I recomend that you do a couple of things: 1. Talk to a patent attorney to get the patent process started 2. As soon as you have the patent filed you can approach multiple companies who might be interested in selling. You will have "patent pending" status which for your purposes will be as good as a complete patent. 3. Don't believe it until it's in writing. Be working with several firms who might be interested, that way if one falls through you will have things lined up with one or two others. 4. Watch your attorney expenses. They like to nickel-and-dime for various filings and updates. Once the patent is filed you might consider changing the contact person on the patent to be yourself so they don't charge you when they get a little update here and there. Have fun! Joel

You would first need to patent the invention. Then, you would need to approach specific businesses within the industry and discuss licensing the right to manufacture and use your product. You would not license a product to an industry as a whole.
