Hello. As a musician and entertainer I am looking to obtain a business license for my home-based sole proprietorship.
I perform and offer music services all over the nation and world at times, do I need a special license to do this or is my local city business license sufficient? Do I need a state license? Do I need a license in other states if I play there?
I tried using the tool on this site but my business type seems to lead me to general info and is not clear for sole proprietors since the needs seem to address larger organizations. Any assistance you can provide would help tremendously in my process.
Call your city clerk's office. They issue business licenses. Some communities license all businesses. Others license only some business activities, such as taxis and restaurants. The city clerk can tell you and they can tell you if your state has a business license (most do not). If you have not registered your business name with your local agency that registers business names, you will want to do that.
