How do I determine market demand

How do I determine if there is enough demand in my area for a business idea? I would like to start a home-based business. This is not an online business, but a business that will be providing a service in my local geographical area. Everybody is telling me that first I need to determine if there is enough demand for this business in my area before I start it. So how do I find out whether the small business I want to start has enough demand in my area to be successful or not? Also, would Google Insights be helpful for doing this research? Thanks to anyone who tries to help, matt
