How do I know where the line is between artistic interpretation and copyright infringement?

So I am an artist and I get requests rather often to create a custom piece of
art that creatively incorporates a trademarked business logo or slogan. For
example, one person wanted a big metal wall display that incorporated the
Nike swoosh. I do very modern/abstract styles, so how do I know if something
like that is justified simply as a work of art or if it falls under some sort
of copyright infringement? I read up on Andy Warhol's on-going issues with
using celebrity photos in his artwork, but again it seemed like there were
mixed opinions on that. I don't want to risk getting in trouble, but I would
love to accommodate these types of requests if I am legally able to do so!
Any help/advice would be appreciated... Thanks!
