@rongoldstein - haha very funny. If you think your CPA is incompetent you better find another on ASAP, before you get audited ... (I once had a CPA who wont stand by his own work and ask me to just pay the fines, after the audit I fired him). Also just a side note ideas and legality are two different things :)

You know honestly the best thing you can do is ask othe rbusiness owners.  Often times they will have experience with CPA's in your area and they can reccomend someone.  I think my CPA is kind of a waste of money, I seem to have more ideas about how to shelter my money then he does =0.

Finding a good CPA that is willing to work for you (not just work with you) and for the right price, Is like looking for a needle in a haystack and this is something that we dont want to do a trial and error with. The best and most effective way to get a good CPA is by word of mouth. Second is to check which CPA is handling similar business. and lastly and hopeful it will be at a last resort is contact your local state CPA society. But remember to interview them if they are indeed a good fit for you. As what could be good for some is not good enough for you. Look for chemistry.

I'd network with other small businses and get their recommendations.   Reviews can be faked.

You can also find a SBDC or SCORE office in your area and ask them that question. They know who is legit and who is not as they are business owners in your community. You could also ask your chamber of commerce or BBB for their recommendation. Or, find and attend some networking events in your area and ask other business owners. Lastly, just go and knock on some doors of a reputable companies in your area and ask them who they use and why - most people (business owners) will talk to you.
