How much reserve money to have when getting a small business loan

In college/culinary school, I was taught to have enough investment be able to stay open for 1 year if I made no income. Anyone have advice on how much this is true or recommendations on what I should account for? I am opening a cake/dessert catering shop. I am applying for a loan soon and want to make sure I am accounting properly.
