I am just curious to see how other people are promoting their web presence for their businesses on line? I am looking for other suggestions beyond being the top spot in google for every keyword. Any ideas? Please let me know, Thanks!
Google is very important, but with their search algorithm changing continuously it is becoming harder to do SEO the old fashioned way. I recommend implementing Face book and Twitter into your efforts. It takes time to build up a following, but over time a lot of people will see your links.

Go on site's like yellow pages to promote website. also blogs that have something to do with your subject, directories linke www.linkmysite.net/ will drive traffic, also forums related to your subject..and even auction sites and craig list like sites. post you links even if they dont have any google value..some links will drive direct traffic, and thats what we all want isnt it??
Automate as much as possible for facebook and all social media and sites.
Use relevant keywords in everything you do.

Start a email list. This is a must for local businesses. No money use mail chimp
Implement standard internet marketing into local businesses
Give stuff away for entering email or SMS Text list.
Yelp, Trip Advisor, Zaget, Maps, Google Places, Wiki, Bookmarking, Facebook pages, Twitter, every review site you can find.
Profiles on forums and Google accounts
Backlinks from relevant websites
Submit sites to Bing, Google and Yahoo and don't forget Cuil serch engine
Citations. aka mentions of your business online

If you have top rankings in google for a variety of keywords then I would suggest that you start a presence on facebook which surpassed google in 2010, did you know that fanpages our usually on googles 1st page if you use a keyword rich domain.

You are correct in your thinking that you shouldn't totally rely on organic search results to be your one and only source of traffic. Even if you are currently doing well you never know when the next big G algorithym change is going to send you 3 pages back. It's like living on a fault line and an earthquake is overdue.
I've never gotten a lot of traffic from directories and have never been a fan of buying ads. But three things you can do bring yourself traffic without relying on the search engines so much are:
1. Diversify when you do your keyword research. By this I mean attack from different angles and perspectives. You still want to find keywords with a medium to high monthly query count and low competition. Pick keywords that would be interesting to your target but a little different from your main idea. For instance - do reviews on competetive products or services using their name as your keyword. Pull your audience in and get them interested in YOUR similar product or service. This still relys on organic search results to bring you traffic but by using keywords from multiple angles you stand on firmer ground. Kinda like diversifying you investment portfolio.
2. It goes with out saying - social networking. Facebook, Twitter, even You Tube will bring you good traffic. Do lengthy write ups in your You Tube video descriptions and SEO it for your keyword(s) just like you're wrintg a blog post.
3. Find high query keywords and write (quality) articles to submit to article directories like Ezine, Squidoo, Hubpages, etc. Do your on-page SEO on these as well as far as keyword density and title and you have a good chance of getting some good traffic. By doing this you can rely on the directories' own trust rank to help pull your article on the first page to funnel traffic to your site.

There are many ways to promote tuwebsite but I think that has better results, is the natural positioning seo, do not generate any costs or expenses are minimal, but the results are very good, although long-Palz, 3 -8 months
