Get yourself a good tax accountant. Don't try to do it by yourself. Find someone who is a CPA and is easy for you to talk to. Interview a couple of different people, if you like. Just wait till after April 15... Decide on the one who seems to you most professional (answers your questions clearly, take the time to explain things to you, doesn't judge, etc) and with whom you have a good rapport. I have a client who forgot to mail his 2008 returns in. There will be a letter (yet another) coming with a fine of some $2000 from the IRS, but I work with a very good tax accountant and she knows a rule which applies in his particular case and which will enable her to ask for a waiver of this penalty. Don't take it all upon yourself. Taxes is a big field and it's best left to professionals. Best of luck to you and you will feel SO MUCH BETTER when it's taken care of!

The interest rate on a credit card or bank loan may be lower than the combination of interest and penalties imposed by the Internal Revenue Code. * An installment agreement may be requested if you cannot pay the liability in full. To be eligible for an installment agreement, you must first file all returns that are required and be current with estimated tax payments. You can complete IRS Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request. At a minimum, the monthly amount you will be allowed to pay is an amount that will full pay the total balance owed within 60 months.
