I own an event planning business. We occasionally use the services of private bartenders when an event is held at a location that allows patrons to bring in their own alcohol. Because there is much liability associated with alcohol consumption, you will need to protect yourself. You should create a business and register it as an LLC rather than simply offering your services for a fee. Having an LLC will protect your personal assets should you be sued. You could also subcontract your services to a bar catering business or a bar that does off-site events, but be sure you have some type of written information regarding each job, just in case. You should also have at least $1 million in liability insurance. Hopefully, you will never have to use it, but should someone drink too much and injure others, you and everyone associated with the party could be sued.
