Most states require that you register your business name and entity type (sole proprietor, LLC, etc.) when you first open the business. Whether you can bring your existing clients into your new business will depend on your contract with them. If you executed the contracts in your name, then you may not be able to. However, when you open your business banking account, you should be able to deposit payments from the clients into that account.   The primary issue may be one of liability. If you establish an LLC or corporation you reduce your personal liability. If you signed contracts personally, then you would be operating as a sole proprietor and you personally assume liability for any situations that might occur.

Hi Alex,                You should register a company as soon as possible, there are tax benefits which can only be use through a corporation. E.g.. Health care premium, home office deductions.
