The Importance of SBA Allies

This morning I was reminded once again of just how valuable a good working
relationship with the SBA is. Almost all of my clients are dealing with
issues relating to SBA loans, and there are often situations unique to an
individual circumstance or client.
Through my years of working with the SBA and through the work Second Wind
Consultants has done as an office, I have a number of excellent SBA reps that
I can speak with at any time. This allows me to track down defaulted loans,
get definitive, immediate answers on any questions I may have, and keep up to
date on any changes in SBA guidelines as they occur.
Having a great relationship with SBA representatives is invaluable to my
clients in many other ways as well. Currently I am working on a client that
was being collected on by the U.S. Treasury. Most consultants you will
contact will tell you that this client should file bankruptcy even though the
loan landed in Treasury due to negligence and improper handling on the part
of his lender.
An SBA servicing agent I speak to weekly was able to file a retraction on my
client’s case and pull the file out of Treasury. This removes the 50%
guideline Treasury utilizes so we could work within the confines of his
financial condition and avoid bankruptcy. This was only possible because of
the close relationship with the SBA and Second Wind’s experience in all
aspects of SBA lending.

for a limited number of reasons. While it's true that us within the workout
profession have relationships, borrowers should not assume that I can get
them out of a jam with the Treasury. Instead, it's better to be proactive and
work out the situation BEFORE the Treasury ever gets involved.
