Starting a Dream

My 74 year old Dad has started putting into motion a venture that will turn what he has dreamed of for 30 yrs into a business. He has bought a portable sawmill and is upgrading all of his equipment to saw some wood. After falling in love with this mill it was in his soul. I stand in the gap. I've got to move some things now to get his business started off properly. He has direction, drive and contacts. I want to organize it and do it to make his dream run smoothly. I ask for suggestions and support to help give birth to a new venture in the winter of a hard working gentle soul's life.

Have you written a business plan yet? As you do the research for it, you will
find the sources for the wood (unless you have your own already), lumber
brokers to purchase the wood, and much more. As KMurray mentioned, a good
starting place is with a counselor at a small business development center or
SCORE office.

This is a comment you might expect a CPA to make... but I would really
encourage you and your dad to have a good accounting system from day 1.
That'll give you instrumentation for making better business decisions.

I say this because I feel like I regularly see good businesses get into
trouble because they don't want to have a good accounting system or think
they can "fly blind" if the idea is good enough.

  Hi, a good place to start for your Dad's business might be with one of SBA resource partners: SCORE or Small Business Development Centers. These organizations provide free business counseling and training.
