Issues With Email - Do We Rely on it too much?

It seems like everyone now relies on email to the point of fault. By that I mean customers, vendors, workers will just assume an email got delivered and not realize that it may be in the junk folder, may have been rejected by the server or lost in transit. This isn't like using UPS. What do people do to get it through to people that in the event they don't hear back, pick up the phone?
