I'm looking to start a web development business on the side. I get
conflicting advice on how to incorporate. Can anyone explain what would be
better for a sole proprietor?
LLCs are definitely the more popular entity for smaller businesses.
Corporations have quite a few formalities (stock, regular meetings, etc.)
that many small business owners just don't want to have to deal with.

You may want to begin as an LLC. That will cover your personal liability and
the cost is usually less than that to establish an S-corp. You can always
switch to being an S-corp at a later date if the business grows.
