I completed research awhile back on a related topic and I found that in many states, once a court order is obtained to seize property, the order should be taken to the sheriff's office and a deputy will assist in recovering the property. In many cases the property is no longer in the possession of the original owner, so part of the process is discovering the current location of the property. A judgment recovery agent would be the go between with the person who was granted the court order and the sheriff's office.

I have a friend whom is a collections attorney, just be aware that it will often be 6 months of longer before you're able to gain any money from your first judgments. I've also heard of people purchasing small judgments from individuals for 5 cents on the dollar and then working to collect them themselves. Here in California there is a 10% annual interest added to each judgment so the finances can work out well if you are detail oriented and your debtors still have jobs.

I should add that in many states you can legally purchase these judgments and then collect them without a license since you, personally are now the legal owner of this debt. Just a thought, although if I were you, I'd take the time to have an official LLC set up for this purpose.

Hi, The course I'm looking into states that you're not truly collecting a 'debt' because a debt would indicate that it was owed to someone else and not yourself. I guess the key is to have the judgment assigned to yourself and then work on finding the person's assets and collecting it.

A call to your state department of finance should provide the answers you need. You may need to become recognized by your state court system. In my state the supreme court maintains a registration program for several types of service providers that may be called upon to assist in court matters.
