Medical Supplies Export Business

With a business partner who is a Ugandan citizen, I am starting a medical supplies export business to Uganda, Africa. We plan to start out very small initially by shipping small items; gauze, blood pressure machines, pregnancy tests, etc. And, if all goes well I plan to eventually ship medical equipment.
I know that I must consult an attorney for registering the company, and my partner is doing likewise in Uganda. I realize that there are pifalls with a venture like this and I don't have a lot of start-up capital, so that's why we're going very slow.
My partner also suggested including cosmetics as Ugandan women prefer American style cosmetics. Initially, I was against that, but perhaps he's right.
So, I am asking the Community for suggestions or other insight I can use. I'm in the process of investigating shipping, dealing with American and Uganda customs, etc. I met a woman from California some time ago who had a small home-based medical supplies export business and she was doing quite well.
Africa is an ever-emerging market for a wide range of businesses so I think we must 'strike while the fire's hot!'
Advice/suggestions or comments anyone?
Thanks.
