How do I determine a mileage to reimburse myself for mileage while using my personal car on business trips (i.e., sales calls)? Can I just use the IRS mileage rate?

I don't know fpor sure but I'd say that being set at a state level makes sense.  Part of the mileage rate is probably determioned by the state of the roads in the state etc, orr at least that would make theoretical sense.    Mileage rates are not a major fiscal element so I'd expect this flexibility to be delegated to the state level rather than federally mandated.

Check with your employer. They may use a different rate. If they don't, then using the IRS one should be sufficient.

The IRS 2009 optional standard mileage rates is used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business or non-profit use and is currently set at 55 cents per mile. Many employers do not go with the irs rate for mileage. Most pay much less. Some will give you a gas card.
