I cannot stress enough the importance of marketing and knowing your customer
base

Email marketing starts to be replaced with marketing trough social networking. Social networking is more efficient because can be free in case you don't want to buy advertise on social networks, although sometimes that is a plus. You can find more information about your potential clients and you can keep in touch more directly.  Also, form my experience, you can promote your business by incuraging others to promote it for you. If you have o number of loial clients, they will recommend your website to their friend and family and can bring you more customers. Give them something to thank them for their efforts (like a speciald discount) and they will bring you more and more customers.

SEO is undoubtedly one of the most effective advertising and marketing tool online, it improves one's online visibility through various process and one of them is off-page optimization or commonly known as 'Link Building' process. Email marketing is also another great tool as you've mentioned but then you still highlight SEO as an effective one. I must say and agree to you if you will be able to be competitive in the online battle where competition is tough as compare to traditional way.

There are so many ways to market your business. SEO is one way which was mentioned. Social media marketing is another way that can be both cost effect and just plainly effective if implemented with a planned strategy.   However, social media can be time consuming.  Just like with your other marketing activities you need to set a budget to hire someone to do this for you or designate some time each day where you devote to this task.   There seem to be endless discussion groups and social media sites that are emerging these days.  Similarly to traditional marketing you need to consider your target audience. Select your groups and discussions wisely.  Where will you get the maximum exposure to your target audience for the time you invest in the activity? What message do you want to communicate about yourself or your company? Remember you are always sending signals about yourself and your company every time you enter one of these groups. Make sure your online social presence is consistent with your brand.  I am aware of the fact that many small businesses do not have a big marketing budget to spend on marketing but there are many tools and ways to create a great brand and get your message out in a consistent manner without spending large sums of money.

Your question always depends on your visitor target.  If you are targeting B2B or B2C or B2B2C your approach has it's specific strategy that needs to be considered.  I'll assume you are asking a B2C question and if that is the case, there is nothing more powerful than excellent consumer reviews on independent review sites such as Yelp or Google reviews. I also recommend a series of short 1 minute or less videos as excellent search engine food since it helps your engagement on the site at the same time doubles as extra search engine food for the pages that you are working a getting ranking for. If your engagement is great, your conversion if visitors to customer will be great. Hope this works for you! s.
