In many states you are sent an annual form to sign and return to indicate that the LLC is still active. If you don't return the form, then the state legally dissolves your business. You don't have to do anything; the state sends the forms to your address of record. Your responsibility is to inform them when your business address changes, since these forms cannot be forwarded by the post office.

Thanks Ed, and Christine, I found a couple sources online. It appears that in NJ, I don't have to renew my LLC every year. I will check the link you supplied, Christine, about renewing the alternate name. But I only registered my business under one name, so I don't think that I have an alternate name. You do not have to reregister your LLC every year but you MUST file an annual report. You can find the information here: http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/revenue/dcr/programs/ann_rpt.html (read the first paragraph). You're lucky though, the NJ fee is cheaper than many other states I've seen.

Most states don’t require any annual paperwork or administrative procedures. Some do charge annual fees and taxes. California is a state that does this, for example.
