In need of a government grant

I would like to start a thrift store and and have no money of my own to invest.  I would like to know, since it is a non-profit organization, would I qualify for a government grant?

Hi Irizarry, Grants are mainly given to nonprofit organizations. Not every thrift store is considered a non-profit. Will the all net profit from this business be donated to an organization? If so, take a look at the Small Business Grants page, especially the How to Find Grants Section. If your thrift store is not a non-profit, you may want to look into Small Business Loans, as they can be a good alternate to grants. If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them! The likelihood of you getting a grant is very slim - grants just do not work that way. I would suggest you find a SCORE or SBDC in your area and make an appointment. They are free to use and can help you develop your idea - including finding sources of funding.

There is an excellent association for the thrift store industry, NARTS, or National Association of Resale Professionals. Their web site contains a great deal of information on how to start a thrift store, including information about financing. You might take a look.

I was watching a thread on this site and several people were sorely disappointed after months of trying. -phanio seems to have some insight... good luck!
