My wife recently opened an online store that sells doll clothing.  My accountant told me I needed to file a DBA (Doing Business As), get a sellers permit and a state sales license.  The first two I did via legalzoom and the last one I did online via the state of California.  She registered this as a sole proprietorship.  This way you don't need articles of incorporation.  At least in California you only need the DBA and state sales license to open up a business bank account.  I was also told that we only need to charge sales tax on orders coming from California.
