My business started on Dec. 17th. I had less than $1000 in sales and lots (tons!) of expenses. Can I file a combined form next year to incorporate 2008 and 2009?
You can also contact your local IRS office and ask them - may help you out a bit before paying for some advice. Not a tax professional either - but would say that you file separately - then carry forward any losses.

I'm not a tax expert, but I do believe you still need to file 2008 and 2009 taxes separately for Federal and State. I recommend you contact your local Taxpayer Assistance Center and state revenue agency to get the offical word.
Also I'm going to move this thread over the tax forum where someone better informed about this issue might be able to help you.
