just starting new business, now interviewing people, was presented with situation today,. person showed ID with social security card, and green card, but it was obvious they were not real. Can I call Soc. Sec. to verify if the number on card or green card it real. I have not yet hired anyone but would like to have this person as first employee, but want to comply with law too.
you might check out E-verify (Alien Verification Initiative) - a voluntary Federal program designed to enable employers to quickly verify eligibility of potential employees to legally work in the U.S. Participation in the program is voluntary and free, but you must sign up to participate. Enrollment information is available at https://e-verify.uscis.gov/enroll/. The initiative is jointly sponsored by the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
