New sites are hard to start. Google has a sandbox effect to prevent spam, so to get past this each new site will need strong links from high page rank website or just time. If a website has 1-2 years on the net then it will pick up in SERP and will get traffic. The easy part is to build a site, the hard part is to market and get traffic to the site.
Try adding links in web directories like www.linkmysite.net/ this way you can get some links and will be more popular in googles SERP's.

Speed, speed, speed..... Download YSlow from Yahoo and use Google Labs Pagespeed to check the important pages on your site. If your site is slow - the search engines will punish you (not to mention users).
Rinse and repeat.

Search Engine Ranking is little hard work. But, if you can work hard and thinkable you can get success on it. First, update your website on regular basis. It is very very important. Also, try to up your site's PR and make back links to your site.

what help do u want? are you talking about seo then start with google. and learn some seo myth it might help you. If it's about coding then you should do on page seo for it.
Your online marketing strategy depends on if you deal nationally or within a specific geography. If you are more localized, I would say put your focus on local directorys including yahoo and google local ads. If you are national, then you should focus on SEO and even pay per click advertising.
