Hi Saint, It is in your best interest to go into business doing something you LIKE. Otherwise, you will quickly lose interest. If that 'something' is what you really like, but you know little about, then it is better to research and learn as much as you can about it than to go into business for something you know a lot about, but do not like as much. You must think that working for yourself will lead to MANY more hours working than any 9-5 job. So you better do something you like :) As GoodFTA said, you should take a look at your life and what you are into and figure out a way to make money doing something you ALREADY do. It could be as simple as, for example, enjoyment of 'creative thinking'. You could easily start off with a blog if you are a thinker and GOOD writer. There are ways bloggers can make money (e.g. selling text and banner advertisements, writing reviews for a cost, or becoming affiliates of other companies). It is passion that fuels success for business owners. You can only be passionate about something you like. Hope this helps!

I would look for ways to combine any knowledge or interest with the internet. Internet is a hassle to learn at first but becomes easier with time. If you are prepared to to put in some work and actually learn the working of the web you can learn how to profit. If you have any form of knowledge about any form of hobby or anything really, if you take the time to develop a web-presence you can turn into an authority. Saint, I would begin looking at products and services that you are very familiar with and have a passion for. You will also need to determine whether there is a market for said product or service. The easiest way to sell a product or service is if you already believe in it and see its values. Dear Saint I think all of us are in consensus about the fact that you need to determine what your unique skills are, and as some of the contributors have already suggested you could even get a self assessment done on one of the sites online. Most of them have a fee though. Try googling 'Free Self Assessment'. If you want to involve you sons in the business plan, you could perhaps start a trading business, where you buy something at wholesale prices, stock it and distribute it at marked up prices to local businesses.
