I am confused about the requirements of a business overseas. I live in
America but I am looking to open a learning center in Jamaica, West Indies.
My vision is to get grants and private funding in America. Jamaica Ministry
of Education in Jamaica, says I have to register my school and get a TRN (Tax
return number) I also know I have to register my business in America. So do I
register my business first in America as a non-profit business, then after
building the school register it in Jamaica. Please HELP!

jamica. The only was I can see you getting a grant in the US is if your
headoffice is located there then you branch out to Jamacia.

international effort it makes sense that you secure your paperwork in the
states first and then proceed in Jamaica.
You might consider getting a fiscal sponsor (also called a fiscal agent).
This is where you have a nonprofit that has a similar mission as yours and
work with them.
Any grants you pursue is done under the hub of the organization that already
has its 501c3 nonprofit status and your project is a program of that
organization.
Thus, you don't have to go through the labor of starting a brand new
nonprofit organization. You can pursue grant opportunities and the nonprofit
you work with will have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to determine how
any grants received will be disburse. They often take an administrative fee
(maybe 5% or whatever is agreed upon).

non-profit status from the IRS. You can find information and the necessary
forms on their web site. Because you live in the U.S., after you obtain your
501C3 status, you register your business with your state agency that handles
such matters.
You obtain a tax ID number from the IRS AFTER you get your non-profit info
from the IRS. Non-profits have different tax reporting numbers than
for-profit businesses.
Once you are compliant with U.S. laws, then you can begin the process of
registering with the Jamaican government.

grants you are pursuing.
There are basically two types...Public Grants and Private Grants.
Public Grants (also know as federal grants can be found at http://grants.gov
and http://cfda.gov). (Free Resource)
The best source for Private Grants (also known as Foundation Grants) can be
located at the http://fdonline.foundationcenter.org/. (Fee Based Resource,
but free access at some libraries).
Please note: most of these grant opportunities are for nonprofit
organizations.
