Hi all. My name is tammie and i own a small gift shop in Salem MA. I have recently seen a slight increase in customer sales from other states via email, phone, that want me to ship the product to them. There is a 5 percent sales tax in MA but what do i do about out of state orders in regards to tax? any help? thanks

Hi Tammie: Welcome to the Business.gov Community! According to a page on Collecting Sales Tax on the Internet, it looks like if you do not have a physical presence in another state, then you are not required to collect sales taxes from customers in that state. It would depend on how your state determines the rule. To find out whether your business qualifies in this case, contact Massachusetts Department of Revenue to clarify. Hope this helps a bit.

You do not charge them any sales tax. It will be 0%, AFAIK.
