Hi. I am a hobbyist - photographer and will be showing and hopefully selling
some of my work for the first time at a local craft fair. I don't know what
is required for such a small, just starting home based business...i.e. what
do I need to do for Massachusetts state? federal? Do I need to get a sales
tax license? a seller's permit? a tax registration certificate? How long does
it take? Thanks for any info! - Robin

hobby business. You can find information on the IRS website about hobby
businesses. You would be able to deduct your expenses up to the amount of
your profit, but you cannot have a loss. As a hobby business, you do not need
to register a business name.
You can obtain a temporary sales tax permit to cover only the show in which
you are participating. In some states you can print a temporary permit from
your state's website.
