"Poor Man's Patent/Trademark"?

Hi,
I am doing research on starting a business and I have heard a few of my friends mention about a poor man's patent or poor man's trademark. It says that if you write a letter and post-mail it to yourself and never open it until someone has taken your idea or you formally register your idea/name, that it would hold up in court?
Is that true? Or would I be wasting time, ink, paper, and a stamp?
Thanks!
Nathan
