I am wondering how to find out if specific businesses have to get signed privacy policies from their clients.  How can I find out if we must do this?  Looking at the law it looks like only financial institutions need to comply with this but I know doctor's offices have privacy statements so what other businesses must comply?

You may want to check the web site of the Federal Trade Commission and look for the Red Flag Rule. Also check their 'Facts for Businesses' section under identity theft, privacy and security. The law was recently tightened. If your business collects and stores (on a computer or in a file cabinet) personal information about clients, including but not limited to, credit card numbers, SS numbers, birth dates, and other personal data that could be misused if stolen, you may need a privacy policy. Department stores, furniture stores, dentists, veterinarians and any other business that offers credit, even for a short time, needs one.
