Protecting an idea for a service oriented company

How can an idea for a service oriented company be protected against someone
taking the idea before one has a chance to launch it? Is this something that
can be copyrighted?

software, etc. You cannot copyright an idea for a service business. You can
trademark the name and logo, but not the idea. If you service business
doesn't include some type of barrier to entry, such as requiring special
education or licenses, then you will need to compete on customer service or
in some other way that sets your business apart from potential competitors.
