Public List of Businesses by State?

Hello, I recently received a physical letter in the mail from Comcast
addressed specifically to my business shortly after I established it - it
advertises their internet services. I can only assume they grabbed this
information from searching public records about new businesses and noticed
that I existed. To me, this seems like an excellent marketing strategy for my
own business. However, I'm not sure how they found my information. I cannot
find a public list of businesses that exist (yet alone information about the
date they started). Can you help guide me on how I can access and search this
information?
Thank you,
- Eric

public records - everything from business openings and closings to marriage
and divorce filings. In my area, we have two such publications. You would
need to subscribe to get the information, but they do contain much
information that is useful for marketing.
