Question regarding start up of a new Non-Profit

I am currently in the research phase of starting up a new Environmental Education Non-Profit Organization. I am doing my research now but this summer I hope to be securing funding. However, the question I have is should I be securing funding first before filing as a 501(c). I am looking at The Green Foundation for grants. I would need some start up funding is it best to get a small business loan at first and then try to secure grants after incorporation or are there grants you know of to help with start up of a new non-profit.

You have to realize that getting your Tax exemption status from the IRS will take between 8-12 months. Yes, they will ask you a bunch of questions on how you plan to fund it but they also understand how difficult it is to project into the future your pro forma profits. I'd say go ahead and get the paperwork for the status in the process first because it takes so long anyway. I am starting my business as well. I did not complete the 501c but what I would advise you to do since you need money now is to get a loan or try to get donations or sponsors to help you. I don't think you can get any grant funding until you have the articles on incorporation done and 501c done.

All foundations will require you to have all of your paperwork in place - they will ask for a copy of your 501(c)(3) from the IRS.

You'll want to get your non-profit status before you start searching for grants or funding. No program or funding source looking to fund non-profit companies is going to fund a person(s) or company that doesn't currently have the proper status. Then, you can take a look at SBA.gov to get the ball rolling.
