question on starting a small clothing/accessory business

hi, i'm looking to launch a small boutique clothing brand selling t-shirts online. its gonna start out as a sole proprietorship with no employees on payroll, i'm the only person who will be operating the business. how should i go about doing it? i intend to register the business in california where i reside, but how do i register the company name? can anyone walk me through the basic steps? big thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

Starting with a small business is not that hard as long as you have your weapon at hand- and that is knowledge on what you are doing. For more local information - find a SCORE or SBDC in your area. They can walk you through your local process. They are free to use.

Yes. If you plan on having your business located in LA, it would be the LA County Recorder-Clerk's Office. JimD

loz4en, Since your business is a sole proprietorship, you do not need to register your business with the state. However, many states require a sole proprietor to use their own name for the business name unless they formally file another name as a trade name, or fictitious name. For example if you do not want your business named 'Joe Smith', you need to file for a fictitious name. In California, the County Recorder-Clerk's Office, where the business will be conducted, is where you need to register for the Fictitious Name. A good section to read is Sole Proprietorship. thanks, that provided some more concrete information because i'm planning to file and register my brand name. so i should be contacting  the los angeles County Recorder-Clerk's Office i guess?
