I'm hoping that someone can help me here. I have a creative project management LLC in NJ. My work is never in the same location because we do film production, web videos, commercials, etc. on a project to project basis. My office(home) is in NJ but I have clients from NY who would like some work done.
Do I have to register the company in NY as well since the client is from there and I will need to shoot the project in NY? Or is it ok to do business as is because they are contacting me at my physical location in NJ?

Hi kmonahan,
If you are planning to do work in another state like New York, you may need to obtain a certificate of authority to do business from the NY Secretary of State. Here is the information about the application for authority for foreign corporations (that is businesses outside of NY state).

You should be able to conduct business wherever you would like without having to register. You are having client meetings or doing production in NY. Your transaction are probably occuring in NJ where you receipt the PO and deposit the checks. If you open a office in NY that may be a diffent issue.
