Hi Amanda: I assume by now you have already filed your LLC.  But for anyone else that may interested, yes you can use your home address to file a LLC in most States.  Every State requires that you have a registered agent within the State. Basically, a registered agent is a person or entity that has a phyiscal address within State where the business is being transacted to accept any legal service or process.  The registered agent is required to notify the corporation or LLC of the pending legal action and forward the service of process to the corporation or LLC.   You can use your home address if it is in the State where you will be transacting businesss.  If you move or find office space for your business you will need to file a change of registered agent with the State and usually pay a fee to the State to make the change. Many companies can provide this service for you for a yearly fee if you do not want to use your home address.   There are advantages to hiring a professional registered agent.  If you hire a registered agent there will be no process server coming to your home or place of business.  If you move or find office space you will only need to notify your registerd agent of your move. You will not need to notify the State of your change of address and will not need to file any documents with the State which would also require paying the State additional fees to file the change.  A registered agent can also remind you when any annual filings are due to the State so that you do not miss any important filings or tax payments. Hello Amanda - Although Nicole is correct in that you should consult with your local Secretary of State's web site to determine the legality and/or issues of running a business out of your house, there are millions of people who start a home-based business every year. In fact, one of the things that makes this country so great is the ease by which people can open a business. I live in Colorado and started a business out of my home before I actually moved into an office, and it was very easy. I simply consulted my accountant to find out what would be the best way to file my business (LLC vs. S-Corp), then filled out the paperwork with the Colo. Sec. of State. We used a P.O. box as and address for a while and registered all the financials (e.g., credit cards, bank accounts, etc.) using our home address. Changing the business registration address in Colorado was easy, and I imagine it's probably also fairly straightforward in your state, too. Most residential areas are not zoned for commercial businesses, and your local government may have tight restrictions on the types of businesses permitted to operate out of a home, even temporarily. Check with your local zoning authority (your city or county government) for rules that apply to you. If you are allowed to use your home address until you decide to relocate, you can change your business registration documents, however there will likely be a fee to do so.
