I am having a heck of a time getting answers from state/local offices (they just send me to more links). so I thought I would try this. I live in Palm Beach County. I do freelance writing on the internet for a few companies and decided that since I am a independent contractor I would set it up as a business so I can use a EIN #. The only things I have done so far are filed for a fictitious name and received a EIN # from the IRS website. Beyond that I cannot figure out what I need, if anything, to satisfy the state. It is really not genrating much income at all but want to get statred on the right foot with this.
It looks like I will need to do SE taxes and estimated taxes for sure. I still do not understand waht licenses and permits I need for Florida is I am not required to file with the state (sole proprieter). Sorry, if I am sounding like an idiot!

Congratulations on starting your business. Take a look at Starting a Business in Florida. It seems as though you might be around steps 5-8. You will need to register with the state since you are required to pay the state taxes. Go through the steps and make sure you are getting your bases covered.
