It is possible to either do it yourself, through an accountant, or through an attorney. However, even though you can do it yourself or through an internet company I would strongly recommend against it because there are a lot of traps you can fall into especially if this is your first time doing so. If cash is a problem I would at least schedule a one hour consultation with a business attorney or an accountant or both. This is one of those things that you either pay now or pay a lot later. Maurand, Don't be skittish about going through a service to set up your LLC. It is not nearly as expensive as you would think. It typically costs only a couple of hundred dollars. Then you know it is done right. Some services also provide annual minutes, updates, etc., that you need to stay legal. Thanks to everyone, there is some good information on this page about legal structures for home businesses, in particular LLC's for home based business owners to consider. Another consideration is Incorporating S or C corporations but I suppose that would depend on you business goals are you planning to expand you business in the future, take it pubic. There are also tax considerations and paper work... I think it is wise to see a business tax accountant or attorney at some stage. Setting up a LLC is not that hard as other people have said. You should talk to a CPA so that you will find out what the best business structure would be for your company.

I think is is best when forming an LLC to:   1) Have a lawyer ...need to build that relationship anyway and starting an LLC     is not that expensive.   2) Get an accountant...need to build that relationship and the truth is     they are not really that expensive.  Having an accountant definitely made     my life easier and gave me access to answers when I needed them.
