I am working with a small business that operating a mechanic and auto body shop in a low income African-American neighborhood. They would like to start an after school program to teach tenagers how to work on automobiles and mentor them at the same time. Looking for potential grant funds. craig.young@mia.org

As stated - start locally with your city officials. If you can convince them that your concept is needed in your area, they could solicit a grant on your behalf. You might also look around for private foundations in your area like health foundations or area foundations and see if they can help. You might even want to contact your local chamber of commerce. Lastly, you might think about soliciting donations from your community. If they want this service, then they should help support it. Plus, most grants will require you to put something in the pot.

Your best bet to find funding for a program like you propose is at the local or state level. You might contact your state department of commerce to see what they can recommend. There are some grants available for programs such as you mentioned, but the requirements are numerous.
