Hi, I just now joined the forum in search of advice. I own a very small business and recently incorporated. I have hired a tech guy to install a server and 4 computers for our office which is expanding. I have purchases "Volume Licensing" for Office 2010 and Windows 7 from him. Should I be concerned that the licenses are not in my company’s name but in his. I have no reason not to trust him.
It's possible that your tech guy is a reseller for Microsoft. Either way you should be able to get the license information transfered over so it is in your name. You might want to call Microsoft (I know, it's a dreadful suggestion) but they will be able to tell you where you stand. If he is a reseller and the information is in your name then there's nothing to worry about. I would check your agreement to be certain.
It sounds like your concerns are legitimate. What happens if/when your contract with this other company ends? Will you no longer be able to access the software? I would clarify these questions with the provider and amend your contract if you need to have ownerhship of this software. Keep in mind that you may be charged a higher/additional rate if your original quote was not based on you owning the software.
