While interest and market need are both important, you also want to consider starting a business you know something about.  As obvious as that may seem, I know someone who started a spa because she liked going to the spa, without knowing anything about how to run a spa.  She thought that she'd put a sign on a store front and would just 'wing it' on her marketing, advertising, book-keeping and hiring practices.    That's not a real good recipie for success . . . .

I think it depends upon your interest and the area where you live. Suppose if its a tourist place then your best is heck is to sell stuff related to tourist taste. Make sure you choose the business depending upon you interest else it will become very hard to run. The most important thing is to know your market, where do you live particularly? Is there a void? Spas? boutiques? coffee shops? doggie treat stores? What do you hear about from people that they have to drive super far to get to?

Think of something you like doing and you are happy with. start a business that will help grow. once you are ready check on the location where a small business can be profitable. You can either start with something you know or are passionate about. Or, you can research your community to find out what needs are not being met or underserved. You should also consider the amount of time you want to put into your buisness, your financial situation as funding will be a key issue, and if you want to creat a product, sell someone elses product or sell a service. If you need help, your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) can help you with research - plus, their services are free (part of the SBA).

I think you should win the award for the most broad question on the forum to date! :D This is a pretty broad question; I guess the first step would be to ask what are your interests or hobbies? Do you enjoy working on computers, cooking, fishing, etc? Maybe if we get an idea of what you're already into we can help figure out what might be a business venture you can explore and enjoy doing at the same time.
