Starting an Accredited Online School

I am interested in starting an online school (Accredited). I know I need a business plan etc. I just don't know where to start. Most information is directed at starting schools that are not online.

 

I have researched accreditdation for online schools with the 6 accrediting agencies.

 

I'm just confused how to start? but here are some questions I have.

 

1) Starting out what is the best license to get? I am not sure what business license schools have? (I never see LLC, corporation etc at the end of a school name)

 

2) There is something I am missing about starting this I feel I do not know what do do next. Meaning, its easier to start a ground campus school because the steps would be find property, get accredited, find funding and just start. Online schools are different so I need some answers to prompt my thinking to the next steps.

 

Can anyone help me?

you are confusing entity registration with a license. LLCs, corporations,
etc. are business entity forms and are registered with your state or county
agency that handles such matters. Business licenses are issued by your city
clerk's office and give you the right to do business in your community. You
will definitely need to register your business name and entity type. You may
or may not need to obtain a business license, depending on your city's
requirements.

What are the 6 accrediting agencies? I remember running across them a while back, but I can't remember how to find them.

The DOE has designated licensing agencies for each state, all of which have specific licensing standards. You need to get a license from the state before offering any programs. However, you generally can't start a school and have it immediately accredited. Depending on the agency, it generally takes three to five years of existence before you can even apply for accreditation. In order for an online school to be accredited, the institution must generally demostrate that all the resources that would be expected from an on-site institution would be available online to the students (advisement, registration, library, bookstore, etc.). There are many difficult aspects to starting and running a school (online or on-site), not the least of which is obtaining the funding. It's a very competitive sector even for people with many years of experience. If you have the funding, I may be able to guide you.
