Starting a Bed and Breakfast

I am Canadian and own a home in Florida. I would like to know where to go to get information if I would be allowed to start a Bed and Breakfast there. Our area is zoned for rental and many of the owners do rent.

Hi Laurence: The location may be zoned for rental but you probably need location that is zoned commercial. So, you may need to file for rezoning. For that, you should hire an attorney. But, as BizResearcher said, call the county to find out. Also, if you do decide to start a B&B, you should either get an LLC or incorporate so you can protect your personal assets. Contact the city or county planning and zoning department. They can tell you if you can open a bed and breakfast. Then, contact your city clerk's office to find out what permits you will need. You will be subject to the same regulations as a hotel/motel, including inspections by the health department, having a commercial kitchen, etc.

Get in touch with your city or county planning and zoning department. Another thing to look for is if your doing any construction of the area. Than you may want to check to see if you can dig due to pipes underneath the ground.
