I want to find out ALL the neccessary licences , permits , etc needed to start a business BY MYSELF , AT HOME , selling items on ebay part time, in New York.I know i have to get an EIN and authority to collect sales tax, but im not sure about what type of business licenses i need. When i contact legit wholesalers they ask me for my business information and im not sure what information i will need. Also, is it possible to use my home as my business location so if i send my business information to a wholesaler it looks like i have a location and they wont ask if i own a store ?
I am from Brazil and I do not know exactly what you need to get a 'legal' operating business at home. I can understand your concerns and in this case what I did was to seek for legal advice. Perhaps you have a friend, a friend of a friend, someone in your network or if there was a 'lawyer' around here they could give you more info.
I'm not sure what you mean either, but if you wanted to start a website and advertise it somewhere other than the internet, some other ideas are in the newspaper under the classified section, on the radio, on local cable, or through the mail. I'm not sure what the rates are any more, but the cheapest method out of those would be the classifieds and you can get a good deal of traffic if you advertise it in a paper like the USA Today. Thats how I started advertising my first website and I had some marginal success with it. Hope that helps.
When I started my business I did it initially out of my home. Take no shame in starting from your home. I agree that all you need for selling on Ebay is a business license. As you grow your business you may want to then consider forming an LLC or S-corp for the protection those business forms provide.
All you need to provide to wholesalers asking for you info. is your business info and your business contact info.(your personal contact info.)
Wow things are complicated their, here just just ring them get a number and away you go. I've been a professional seller on eBay, I agree with what some ppl are saying you have to be very careful spending wholesale especially if you order from places like China like I used to do.
I would remain as a sole trader, some wholesalers like to deal with business' that are fully registered i.e Vat reg (Idon't know what it is over there) because it's easier for them to do business. In fact most won't deal with small sole traders :(
anyone with advice on starting an online business with an offline presence? Or the other way around? what are things to consider and issues to look out for?

I live in Maine and when I started wholesaling products on ebay, most of the companies that I dealt with simply wanted me to provide them with a tax id#(you can get this online in a few minutes)and they asked me some general questions about my business. As far as licensing goes, I didn't need to obtain any other special permits, etc. However, because NY may be different, I recommend you visit the NY state website as they will list exactly what you need. I would look in to other types of marketing online besides eBay. Look in to Affiliate marketing and or Niche marketing. Do some research online. You will find most information for free. Google will become your best friend.
You are on the right track, however, Ebay is not the junction to take should you want to florish your business to heights unheard of.
